| The H17 stand was the scene of the world's first tapping of this mis-named "Doppelbock" on Monday. 10 cl for 2€--not cheap, but for the privilege of sampling a 9.5% pale lager brewed with Chinook hops (as far as I could taste/smell, and as far as the guy running the stand could recall--"one of the American 'c' hops"), worthwhile IMO. For one or maybe two little wine glass fulls, anyway. I say it's "mis-named", because IMO Doppelbock ends at 8% or so. This is a PNW US lager barleywine. It's bitter enough, hopped up enough and appropriately, and above all, is stronger than Doppelbock. If Herr Gänstaller is going to experiment and pioneer new styles, then he has to be brave enough to claim new stylistic descriptions for his innovations. Gerstenwein--literally, "barley-wine". That's what it is, and calling it a "Doppelbock" does a disservice to it and the Doppelbock style. Not a grave disservice, but still. I liked it enough for curiosity's sake, but as with the other über-stark Lagers of his that I've had, the super-high alcohol content just doesn't go as well with Lager as it does with ale, and becomes more harsh than it would be with a barleywine of similar strength. I'm sure it'll be a monster hit in Sweden, Amsterdam, and Rome though! |
