Lower Alcohol -- Sauer (Rossdorf am Forst) Sommerbier

Thinking back to my youth (sadly, a long time) growing up in Manchester, I think that most of the beers were of a fairly low gravity when compared with their modern equivalents. No one talked about such things in those long-off days - beer was simply mild or bitter and no one bothered to wander around the country searching out real ales, because it was all real ale. In the Manchester area, it was possible to drink Wilsons, Swales, Robinsons, Hydes, Holts, Boddingtons, Lees, Oldham Brewery, Grove and Whitnall's and Chester's - all locally brewed - plus Marstons, Tetley's and Bass from a little further afield. I do recall that it was not always of great quality but there was no discussion such as the recent topic on this forum - it was just bad beer and you voted with your feet. Talking about methods of dispensing beers, it was common practice for the surplus beer that went into the drip tray to be returned to the barrel via a return line. Consequently, unlike the practice common in recent years, there was no refilling of a favourite glass and pubs had a sign behind the bar informing customers of this ruling. I wonder why beers have become stronger in the UK?
