"Barely begin at 8%"?!? Maybe in the land of EXTR3M3 B33R, but not here. I suppose a few Doppelböcke (plural) here are over 8%, but they are the exception, and certainly not well over 9%. And this is exactly my point: He's pioneering new beers,he's catering to the extreme beer movement places in Rome, Sweden, and elsewhere, he should go whole hog (http://www.dict.cc/?s=whole+hog) and pioneer new stylistic descriptions. Saying "but Germans won't/don't call it that" is about as helpful as saying "Germans won't brew like that". Why not just stick to the same old, same old thing then? And the beer's barely even available in Germany, so why limit yourself to the constraints of German conservatism? It's also a different beer than just a really, really strong Doppelbock -- or Tripelbock, if you will. It's much more like a pale Yank barleywine: hop and alcohol dominated, whereas a Doppelbock is malt dominated. It's not simply further along the continuum of Bock -> Doppelbock -> Tripelbock. I've heard the word "Tripel" used about {0} times in nearly 6 years here; people normally say "dreifach" or some variant thereof, FWIW. On the other end of the extreme, I see that Sauer in Roßdorf am Forst has a 3% beer on: http://www.brauerei-sauer.de/index.htm I believe that shall be on the agenda for today. |
