An Couple of Ideas for Sylvester 2011

I am very curious about this US IPA malarky! I guess that everybody knows the Indian bit of the history - a relic of my country's best forgotten imperial past - but why has the appellation been appropriated for a beer that, from all descriptions, sounds nothing like the various IPA's that I was used to drinking in my youth, many moons ago?
