No Barry, my comment was a bit of an exaggeration as a joke. Ron Pattinson has posted some historical brewing logs on IPA on his blog over the years and I think they do show that IPA's were a bit stronger (partly due to higher attenuation) than other pale ales with over 6% ABV not being uncommon. However, I think the super hoppy and strong IPA is mostly an American thing and they do stand out from the regular Pale Ales over here. Nothing wrong with that, I think some of them are great and then again I think some of them are badly overhopped. But that's my own personal taste as I prefer beers where the hops are used to balance out the beer rather than overwhelm it. |
