Ungespundetes vs Kellerbier |

Well, breweries can (and do) call their beers anything they like. :) I don't know that Kellerbier has to be served from a wooden keg. Obviously if CO2 is used to dispense it will have more gas than a gravity dispensed beer. If I owned a brewpub and wanted to brew a beer in the Franconian style, I might call it a "Kellerbier" even if I served it from my regular serving tanks. St. Georgen of Buttenheim has a bottled Kellerbier and Mahrs has a bottled Ungespundet (as do other breweries). Hell, we have bottled "draft" beer here in the states :) Doing some more reading, www.bier-keller.de defines Kellerbier as "Unfiltriert, naturtrüb, untergärig, niedriger Kohlensäuregehalt (ungespundet)" which I translate as "Unfiltered, naturally cloudy, bottom fermented, lower CO2 content (unbunged)" Michael Jackson says Kellerbier is "German term indicating an unfiltered lager, in which there is usually a high hop content and a low carbonation. Strengths vary according to the original style." And reading at http://bier.oesterreich.com (Austrian Brewers Guild) they imply Zwickel and Kellerbier are they same. Bottom line? I have no idea! There may not be any rhyme or reason to how the beers are named. I like them all no matter what they are names! |
