There isn't really that much confusion. "Vollbier" as a general category (for legal and tax purposes) isn't exactly the same thing as "Vollbier" served in a Franconian brewery/pub. I can predict with 100% certainty that you won't get served a weissbier or any other top-fermented beer; it's going to be a lager of some type, with a variable color range but a rather narrow OG/alcohol range. After that, yes, it's far more ill-defined; one brewer's "Vollbier" is an amber lager, another brewer's is somewhat paler, another brewer's is somewhat darker, hopping levels might vary, and so on, but they'll all be a relatively straightforward bottom-fermented lager beer, assuming there are no major quality issues, something that can be a problem for small-batch brewers. It might be amusing to see them differentiate between a "Vollbier" and a "Pils," but usually the "Pils" will be the paler, lighter-bodied (and we can only guess more hop-laden, but no guarantees) of the two. Think of Keesmann, with both a Pils and a "Lager" on offer; that "Lager" is pretty much the same thing as another (pick one at random) brewer's "Vollbier." |
