Re-dispensed Beer (cont.) |

When the electric pumps came in, I seem to recall that it was mandatory to use oversize glasses, as it was impossible to top up short measures caused by overflowing, as they could only dispense a measured half pint. Apart from clubs and the like, I think that electric pumps for cask ale have virtually disappeared (not entirely sure about this - perhaps one of our residents in England could confirm). I have been in some pubs in recent years that use oversize glasses but I don't think that most beer drinkers like them so much - not sure why. Can you buy 1/3 and 2/3 pint measures? And why would you want to? Beer servery is one area where Ireland is supreme, mainly because Guinness concocted this nonsense about the 2-part serve (a relic from the days when a pint came from 2 different casks). However, it is normal to get a good pint, full to the top, with a good head and woe betide the barman/maid who allows the beer to run down the outside - could result in a tongue lashing! |
