Yes, it makes sense when you're at a beer festival or in a pub with a lot of choices that you haven't sampled before - it's rare that I've ever been in that situation. As I said before, I'm always a little wary of pubs that have a really big selection (more than 4) unless they have the turnover to justify. I was impressed by W. J. Kavanagh's in Dorset St., Dublin - by far the best real ale pub that I've visited in Ireland. They had 4 real ales on tap and, having said that I hadn't tried any of of them before, they happily offered me a tasting free of charge. Giving the outrageous price of beer in this country, I think it's the least a pub can do if it wants to expand its business, particularly as real ale is such a niche market. Really, a good mouthful is all you need to get a pretty good idea of whether you'll like it or not - not a definitive judgement but a good impression. Never had a good beer in Liverpool in my life but, then, I'm from Manchester and I've not been near the place for about 30 years! |
