Schlenkerla too "touristy?" |
Posted by Fred Waltman on 2003-06-21 21:35:14 |
I heard this over and over, most recently in an email conversion with somebody who says he avoids Schlenkerla when in Bamberg because it is too touristy. (I have heard from people who live in Bamberg as well) I have never understood that. Maybe I don't know what they mean by "touristy" -- I would say that Disneyland is "touristy" -- not only because it is filled with tourists, but everything is fake (that doesn't mean I don't have good time when there, though). I suppose a place could be called "touristy" if real, but nobody but tourists go there. This is clearly not the case with Schlenkerla. It is on all of the walking tours of Bamberg and I have seen the occasional tour bus group (if the "If its Tuesday, this must be Bamberg" variety), but I would be surprised if tourists make up more than 10-15% of business in a year, if that (tourists might buy more meals on average, but certainly they buy less beer than average). So if you are one of those who think Schlenkerla is "too touristy" -- please enlighten me. |
