Schlenkerla too 'touristy?' |

Dear friends of Franconia and it's beer, I was born in Bamberg and lived most of my time there. I also spent a lot of time in the Schlenkerla (mostly when we had 1-2 hours in the afternoon sparetime before school started again :-)). But also after my schooltime I visted Schlenkerla often. Yes, I think that after the 'Dom' this is probably the place tourists visit the most. But it's still a typical Bamberger place (just filled with 90% tourists compared to Mahr's Bräu (and others) which are filled with 90% locals :-). I can give you some good advice to make the best outa Schlenkerla: 1. After entering the front door, do NOT go to one of the rooms to the left or right! 2. Stay at the tables that you come across just after entering the front door (next to the small window where you can get a fresh beer from tap). Even in the winter! 3. Stay at those tables and you will have lot of fun, meet various people (funny, strange, all kinds of people you will NOT meet 'inside'). Also there is not so much smoke! 4. Before doing all that go to the Metzgerei Liebold (butcher shop). It's approx. 200m along the street on the right hand side (Obere Sandstr. 10) and get yourself 2x 'Leberkäsbrödla'. Just go in and say "Zwei Leberkäsbrödla bitte (zum mitnehmen)". Means two rolls of Leberkäs to take away. Now having your fresh and hot Leberkäs (the one from Liebold is the best in town!) go back to Schlenkerla, get a beer from the small window in the hallway and take a seat at one of those desks 'outside'. You are not allowed to take your own food inside the rooms on the left or right! 5. Enjoy your Rauchbier and your Leberkäs! This turns you into the ultimate insider of Schlenkerla and Bamberg culture! Have fun! If you need further advise or want to meet me sometime at one of those tables just drop me a line. Greetings to all friends of Franconia and Bamberg!! Marcus |
