Wheat Beer as a Political Statement

Some of you may have seen this discussion on rec.food.drink.beer, but I am trying to provoke some discussion here :) A man I met on my last trip to Bamberg said to me "I don't drink wheat beer. Wheat beer is Bavarian, I am Franconian." While I generally don't care where a beer comes from (so long as it tastes good) with the way Paulaner and the other large Munich breweries are expanding I can see his point. What do you think? Along the same lines, I a few Germans who lived in Bamberg (though I sure they were not *from* there) drinking "Cola-Weizen" and "Banana-Weizen." Now the weizenbier in question was from Kulmbach, so maybe this improved the flavor, but I don't think so. Here in the states we have stuff like "Bacardi Silver" and "Smirnoff Ice" which are malt based but flavored. Is one of these worse than the other?
