Franconian Beer Message Board
Interesting comment from a German friend ... |

First off, Franconians aren't real Bavarians so its OK :) Germans tend to be very parochial about their beer. more so than just about anybody else I've run across. Düsseldorfers don't drink Kölsch and Kölners don't drink alt. Their local beer is the best in the world and the beer from the next village/town/region is pure crap. I'm exaggerating a bit, but only a bit :) This is also a little bit true in Franconian as well (but not as bad). And there are some upsides to this -- it probably has slowed (but not stopped) the rise of national beers. The average German (just like the average American or average Brit) doesn't know a lot about beer -- not the way we are obsessed with it. One of the most spirited recent discussions on this board was about dispensing. Most people are of the attitude "I don't care how it gets in the glass, give me my beer!" For me, the thing about Bamberg (and Franconia) is the *variety* of beer. Outside of Düsseldorf, just about everywhere you go in Germany they drink pale yellow stuff. Now I have nothing against pale yellow beer -- there are very good ones in Bamberg too -- but for me it gets old fast. |
