Interesting comment from a German friend ...

Fred's comment is right on the money. I would also add that in addition to Germans' parochial attitudes about their local beers, they also tend not to travel around their own country, except perhaps to the major cities. I have a German coworker and friend who grew up outside Dusseldorf. He has told me that before he moved to the US he had never had anything other than altbier, kolsch, or pilsner. He has never been to Bamberg, and until I started telling him about it, he had never even heard of it as a beer destination. (And he is a big beer fan, and drinks many styles now.) Don't worry. You won't be disappointed with Bamberg. :-)
