Odd Canadian English pronunciations (very OT)

This from a 'Brit' - a term I like about as much as being called a 'Manc' because I come from Manchester, both words being coined by people who weren't really in love with either place of origin! Putting that aside, I am slowly discovering that Germany is as geographically differentiated as Britain when it comes to accents and dialects and wonder how the devil I'm ever going to learn the language. One thing that I've learned about this matter is that it is quite hard for a non-indigenous speaker of a language to really get to identify different areas by accent. As a native English speaker (that is, being from England), I can pretty well say straight away where someone comes from in my country by their accent. Being from Manchester, I can reasonably identify quite a number of the myriad of local accents (i.e. I can differentiate between Salford, Rossendale, South and North Manchester, etc.) but I can only identify Geordie as a generic sound and am not able to say whether someone from the North-East comes from Newcastle, Sunderland, etc., etc. Having lived in Ireland for nearly 10 years, I can only tell a few outstandingly different accents, such as a general Kerry, Cork, Dublin, Donegal, Belfast etc. In my home county (Clare), there are many different shades of the local accent but I find it hard to differentiate. Don S. is correct in his general comments but the matter is really much more nuanced. The University of Leeds produced a dialect dictionary of Britain and it runs to many big volumes.
