Bamberg at the start of Lent?

The Lent is in the year 2011 from the 9th march to the 24th april. Pork is available. But Bamberg is a catholic city and so many pubs offer fish as their dish of the day (but through the day not only within the lent). But pork is daily on the menue. You should try the Schlenkerla Fastenbier on tap in their brewpub. The Lent is also the core of the spring bock beer saison. Some bock beers start after the Lent, called "Maibock". The best of them ("Mönchsambacher Maibock") is available beginning with the Bockbieranstich 1th may. But for foreign beer lovers it should be possible to talk with the brewmasters to get a glas from the storage tank. Food: Typical for the area (and in all months which include the character "r") with many lakes are carps, baked or blue (cooked). In specialized restaurants like "Walz" in Rothensand (around 10 km outside from Bamberg) You get "Pfefferkarpen", this is a baked carp very sharp (with black pepper). The traditional beer gardens will start at 1th may. But the beer gardens which have also a pub (like Spezial Keller, Café Abseits and so on) open earlier (depending on the weather) or You can take your beer and sit down in the beer garden or Bierkeller. For cultural and other events You can the unofficial calendar of events of the leading monthly magazin "Fränkische Nacht", also available on print for free in many pubs, shops and so on: http://www.fn-magazin.de/veranstaltungskalender/ The similar official calendar of events http://www.kultur.bamberg.de/ You can see some events of the march 2011, but there will be more before Your visit.
