Well I gave in to temptation and read that review before trying the beer. He says he's travelled in California and drunk the super-strong hop bombs produced there, so he knows what "hoppy" really means. Good. The rest, though, sounds like an apology for the Hopfenkrone not being very hoppy in reality, rather more subdued, well-rounded, all those adjectives we use to describe under-hopped German beer. And when he questions the Braumeister about how it is somewhat "sweet", the answer is that the beer is actually very thoroughly fermented, so no sweetness can come from there, and of course the Reinheitsgebot prohibits the use of any sugar (which of course would make a beer dry, not sweet!), so the sweetness must be from the noble hops used. *rolls eyes* Interesting though is the name: "hop crown", as the three hops used are Saphire, Smaragde, and Opal, which are also the three gems present in the (German?) king's crown. I'll try to remain open-minded when trying it, but...29 IBUs doesn't give me much hope. |
