Actually I would modify that first statement a bit in my case. I don't travel the world specifically to drink different kinds of beer. I travel to certain parts of the world because I like certain types of beer and just as importantly I really love to drink in certain kinds of environments (i.e. bier kellers, beautiful old pubs/taverns, etc.). It's great that the beer in these establishments also happen to be great more often than not. In fact I often find that if you locate the really great beer you also usually manage to somehow find the best places to drink and visit. But I'm quiet happy drinking in an old pub in the west of Ireland where Guinness is the best beer on tap. My favorite pub in the world might very well be M.J. Hoban's in Westport, Co. Mayo (http://mjhobanwestport.comeze.com/). I drank Carlsberg the last time I was there. It was pretty much either that or Guinness and I was sick of Guinness that night. Maybe I'm pub geek more than a beer geek? But there is homebrewing. My passion for that activity may qualify me. Tommorrow I'm brewing a 10 gallon batch of Maibock in my driveway. It will be about 20 degrees fahreinheit. So I'm either a geek or a lunatic. |
