It's not just a matter of whether you might fall into a random check and get an expensive DUI. "Drinking and driving" is taken more seriously here for good reason: Driving is simply a trickier undertaking here than in the US. And that's not just a matter of speed-limit-less autobahns or narrower streets, but also subtle and not-so subtle differences in right-of-way types of rules. [[[paragraph break]]] My point is that driving here requires greater attentiveness than in the US--at least for Americans (I assume the situation could be the reverse for German drivers in Yanklee). The effect of a lesser amount of alcohol on a driver's attentiveness over here can be more dangerous than expected. Add to that a bit of jet-lag...[[[paragraph break]]] In addition to random DUI check points, you are also subject to a mandatory DUI test if you're in an accident. [[[paragraph break]]] Plenty of child-less/-free men without mortgages give up driving while visiting here because of the beer question, FWIW. |
