I was able to sit and chat with Matthias during our visit. He said that the decision to make the Eiche stronger in terms of alcohol came about because their initial experiments with the oak-smoked malt suggested that the smokiness would not be as pronounced, and so the strength was increased to balance the beer. Strange, but while drinking Eiche with him in the tavern, I was reminded of the whisky malt beer that used to be brewed by the now defunct Nussdorfer brewery in Vienna.
