Fastenbier

The "Fastenzeit" (lenten saison) goes from Ash Wednesday to Easter (in this year from 17th february to 4th april). Traditonally is this for early spring bocks, p.e. Huppendorfer Josephi-Bock (19th march) (contrary to later spring bocks p.a. Mönchsambacher Maibock). But some breweries offer their "Maibocks" starting before may (p.e. Hofbräuhaus Maibock - starting March, April, Hartmann Heller Bock - starting January, Hummel heller Maibock - starting end of april), because they have to sell it before the hot summer days, and so you can get some of these bocks within the lenten saison. The Schlenkerla Fastenbier is an exception: - not a bock but a Märzen/Festbier (5.5 alc. vol.) - "Fasten" ist part of the name of the beer. This is marketing, not a special kind of beer. Ratebeer shows some other so called fastenbeers outside of Franconia: Augustiner Bräu Kloster Mülln Fastenbier Borbecker Fastenbier Fischer Bräu Fastenbier (Fischer, Vienna) Georgius Fastenbier Glöckl Bräu Fastenbier Hacker-Pschorr Bavaria Bräu Fastenbier Kirchhellener Fastenbier Öufi Fastenbier Schlägl Leichtes Zwickl Fastenbier mit Kräuter For the Schlenkerla Fastenbier they use a mix from pale malt and smoke malt. http://www.schlenkerla.de/rauchbier/sorten/fastenbier.html
