Don, that's really interesting. In 1965, friend and I hitched all over Europe, spending a couple of weeks in the Youth Hostel in Munich. We knew nothing at all about the German beer culture, having been brought up on good old Wilsons, Robbies, Holts and Boddies in Manchester. We ventured into a few beer halls and were totally amazed at the scene - buxom barmaids with great big jugs of beer, bands playing, etc., etc. A year later, we were transiting Munich on the way back from Bulgaria and had an hour to spare while the train changed coaches. We led our little party on the charge down the street into what must have been the Mathaser Bierstadt (yes, I remember that they sold Lowenbrau), dashed down two or three litres and ran back to the train, stopping only to grab a a half litre on the station and only just making the train as it pulled away from the platform. I still have the krug from the station, which is grey with blue lettering saying 'C. Mayer & Co. I assume that this is a long lost Munich brewery? Having now negotiated with spouse, we may take a train that leaves 3/4 hour later, which should give us more time to get down to the Hofbrauhaus - it would seem remiss not to go in at least once in one's lifetime and I just may not have been in there 45 years ago!
