Well I got back a few days ago from this year's excursion to Franconia. This was a bit different in that I visited with my 18 year old daughter and friend as her high school graduation gift. Mind you, it was her idea that I was more than happy to go along with, lest anyone think I duped my daughter into a Franconian beer tour. So it wasn't 100% about beer exploration this time. However, there were still some great beer highlights. Annafest! We had a fantastic time there. It was my first visit. We stayed from 1pm to 11pm. The girls really enjoyed the rides and the live music scene at night (no doubt enhanced by the 2 or 3 liters of festbier they had throughout the day). I really enjoyed trying all the different festbiers. Lowenbrau was my favorite followed by Neder and Eichhorn. I didn't think any of the beers bad, although my friends from Hamburg thought the Hebendanz poor for some reason. I thought it was just average. Only negative was I forgot my cellphone at the hotel and so couldn't locate Nick who was there that day as well. Stohrenkeller - You got to keep an eye on this place. You never know what you'll find. On the first Friday night they had a barrel from Brauerei Heckel of Waischenfeld on tap and it was great. A stronger than normal lager at over 6% I think. Luckily I got to have 4 or 5 of these before the barrel was drained and it was fun also seeing Frank Wetzel there as well. Ottobier at Stilbruch - I finally managed to park myself at Stilbruch on a Sunday night. I ordered Ottobier from the bartender and he started to pull a bottle out of the fridge and I immediately said "vom fass bitte" and pointed over to the barrel on the counter. It was even better than I expected. I will not miss that again. Roppelt's and Kreuzberg Kellers - Despite cool and cloudy weather it was a great relaxing day there again and we got to hang out with Juergen's friend and coworker Elmar and his wife who are more than happy to share funny stories with us about our Juergen and his strange habits. ;) And of course a couple of midday visits to Cafe Abseits. Good times as always. I think I'll go back next May and hope for better weather.
