CAMAL, Bayerischer Anstich

Zoigl in W-Eschawo is a lager, however quirky that might seem. Germans are pretty specific about which beers are top-fermented: wheat beers, Alt, and Kölsch pretty much cover the range, with wheat beers further fanning out into Bavarian-style Hefeweizen and Eisbock, Ueriges Weizen, sour east-German ("Berliner") Weisse, and Gose. There were many other historic German styles, particularly in northern and eastern Germany, that were top-fermented, but have long since gone by the wayside. Those of you with a penchant for old-fashioned German books can take a look at "Der Vollkommene Bierbrauer" to see some descriptions of these styles. It's an interesting contemporary look into German brewing's past, more than 200 years ago. BTW: CAMAL is "Campaign for Authentic Lager." This actually did exist at one point, dunno if it's still there.
