Itinerary for Saturday 21st Aug - it worked!!

Well, now that I've recovered from that walk on Sunday, It's only fair to report back. Started off badly when I arrived at Ebermannstadt to find that I I'd messed up my itinerary by arriving at 10.00 for the 09.00 bus (Doh!). Sat at the station for an hour rather than fill up with beer in the town, and caught the 11.00 bus to Heiligenstadt. I found Aichinger on the marktplatz, only to find that it was close until 23/08, for Urlaub, - mental note....must ring ahead!!. In order to recover the day, I went across the square to the hotel and they whistled up a taxi for me which, after a glass of Lowenbrau Helles (Buttenheim of course), I took to Hofheim arriving about 40 minutes behind schedule (cost 11.50). Brauerei Aufsess was open and I tried their Pils and Zwickl, and took a bottle of Spezial home. From Aufsess, I walked back to main road and trudged the 1.6 kms up the hill to Kathi-brau in Heckenhof. I walked into, what I later found to be, the largest biker meet in Germany. There were hundreds of them. Luckily there was still room in the bier garten for me to squeeze onto a table and I was served with a beer within a minute. Their Dunkles was superb. Had it not been for the walk ahead I would have tried some more. From Kathibrau, it was all down hill to Hochstahl and Br. Reichold where I had lunch and tried their Lagar and Kellerbier. From Hochstahl it was a longer 3.2km walk to Breitenlasau and Krug brau. Sat in the shade of the tress outside the front of the pub and had a lagerbier. The next leg was 3.5 km to Nankendorf and Br. Schroll. A nice walk across the fields and then downhill for some 2kms before a steep descent into the village. I would not recommend doing this trip the reverse direction as I think this hill would defeat many. Schroll was quiet with just me, and a man and his dog on the terrace at 4pm. Had one beer before setting off towards Waischelfeld across the water meadows. Not a wise move as they were just that. Wet! After thoroughly soaking my shoes and socks, I arrived at the top end of the village a stared jealously at the people in the local swimming baths. A walk right through the village along the river leads you to Br. Heckel. Superb - just what I expect from a good local bar.. Room full of little old men, all staring at me wondering who I am, not helped by me plonking myself down on a very badly marked stammtisch. Eventually we managed to have a bit of a conversation with one of the guys who spoke a little English, and after 3 beers I left for my bus. Be warned that the bus was due to depart from the stop just south of pub at 1838. He departed as soon as he arrived at 1832. The bus also left early from the other stop, Fischerstrasse at 1837 (vice 1840). This bus will take you to Pottenstein then onto Neuhaus in Pegnitz where there is a onward train connection to Nurnberg or Bamberg via Bayreuth. You can also get off in Pottensten for 2 hours and catch the last bus back to Pegnitz. the timings I posted earlier work well, but you need to be at Ebermannstadt at 0900 not 1000!! The walking sections were spot on, all estimated by Google maps. If anything I was walking them slightly faster than expected. Have a go. it was a good day out, with fine weather but be warned ----take a hat. I've got a nice pink head now. cheers, mat
