You are right: "I actually wondered why the hell places like Hohn and Drei Kronen in Memmelsdorf and Hartmann's in Wurzgau bother to brew beer. These are essentially hotels/restaurants whose major trade is selling food and accommodation. I suppose that we must congratulate them for maintaining their brewing traditions but I wonder for how long they will persist." But in different ways: Drei Kronen has learned, that their location is very good (Autobahn, great enterprises like Bosch with many salesman and so on) and relaunched their rooms and build more rooms. The restaurant has moved away from an offer for the village peoples to tourists and richer guests. The brewery is a marketing tool for gaining residents. They are part of the "Verband privater Brauereigasthöfe" (a national group of private owned brewpubs with beds). They make special offers for beer tourists, packages with beer tastings, beer meals and brewery visiting. http://www.braugasthoefe.biz/dreikronen/cms/core/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=103&Itemid=47 The brewery Hartmann is to great for such a concentration on residents. It is neccesary to sell beer in shops, pubs and so on (Drei Kronen sells only in their own house, on tap and bottles for the residents - six pack). I think the Hartmann concept gets problems. The restaurant is high priced (in relation to other brewpubs). On the other side they sell their beers middle to low priced. They have some interesting beers (Felsentrunk, Felsenkeller with whisky aroma, and Erbschänk Schwarzbier, Hartman Bock), their other beers are trivial. The concept of Höhn is similar to the concept of Drei Kronen (both concepts was developed form the same corporate consultant=). But they focus on food for the locals (p.e. family events) and residents too. Their marketing concept accented their old beer ("Gärchla") and their history (the same family since 1783)). Drei Kronen accented their new beers and a modern touch (a daughter as the next generation of brewmaster, who accumulates experience in Switzerland and so on). Local (Höhn) versus "cosmopolitan" (Drei Kronen). You wonder for how long they will persist. The existence depends on the family: Mr. Straub from Drei Kronen has relaunched his enterprise after a daughter has decided to learn brewing. Höhn: The son has learned cook (his teacher ist Alexander Hermann, a famous star and TV cook) and is working in different restaurants for getting experience. The daughter has learned restaurant service and is working in the Radission Hotel Salzburg. The actual Brewmaster is Georg Höhn. Würgau: The Hartmann brewery is (yet) great enough to employ a brewer or brewmaster.
