Can confirm that the "via-trick" can indeed be very good to get a cheaper (and not necessarily slower) connexxion. Example: I'm going to Switzerland next month and was looking at tickets to Basel. Direkt from the Netherlands: 89 euro's. I booked a ticket with a stopover at Worms, a town I wanted to visit anyway, and the price went down to 39 euros! BTW, this stopover can last up to 48 hrs, and you still can do that with one ticket at no extra cost. Another option which can be helpful is to change the minimum time to change between trains. Standard is 5 minutes, if you make this 10 minutes (or whatever suits you), you may get a hole new set of connections.
