SFO to FRA, NUE or MUC?

Fly one-stop r/t 3/1 SFO-LHR for $624. On 3/2, fly r/t STN-MUC on easyJet for $72. Return MUC-STN on 3/15, return LHR-SFO on 3/16. Total is $696. Beats $900, but you have to sacrifice a little convenience, and you'll also need to spend a couple of nights in London and pay for the transport between Heathrow and Stansted. There might be other ways to think outside of the box too, like taking a cheap SFO-LAX flight, if you can get a bargain fare from LAX to any of FRA, NUE, MUC, or similar. The airlines, for the first time in years, are making profits again. This is due to several factors. First, many marginal players have shut down. Second, there have been several mergers and fleet downsizing exercises to reduce the insane overcapacity that had the industry profitless for far too long. Those cheap flights of yesteryear were part of a slugfest that was unsustainable, and the fares you're seeing now are far more realistic. The golden days when consumers could find absurdly cheap fares like $400 r/t SFO-FRA are probably gone for good.
