Oh, how I will miss the old Regionalsbahn trains, if these are all to be replaced. Fond memories of these on the line from Ulm to Donauwurth. The carriages must have been some of the oldest on the network (Jan - from GDR?) and they stopped about every 5 minutes, at derelict stations, usually to pick up school children. But, you knew that every rattle and bump was bringing you closer to Bamberg (or Eschawo!). We were once on this line when the train stopped at Tapfheim, another derelict station immediately before Donauworth. After about ten minutes (longish stops were not unusual), we began to wonder what was happening, as the tannoy message was totally inaudible. I walked to the next carriage but there was no one there and then I noticed that people were getting off the train (there were only about 30 on it) and running through the rain to shelter in what remained of the station. Eventually, I found a conductor and managed, in that strange mixture of German and English that I use, to find that someone had jumped in front of the train before (apparently, not unusual on that line for some reason) and that a bus would take us to Donauwurth. He had no idea whether we might make our connection. So, we got off and waited with the other passengers. Suddenly, someone shouted 'Autobus' so we all made a run for it. Actually, it was a normal service bus, which was quite full, but, somehow, in very German style, the 30 wet passengers squeezed on to the bus and we eventually arrived in Donauwurth. The next train (I think to Regensburg) wasn't due for 2 hours and, as the rain had stopped, we went for a walk. D. seemed a nice little town but we couldn't find an open pub, so went for a coffee instead. I always tell this story when my Irish friends complain about things here and wish that we were as efficient as the Germans!
