Umlauts |

I use both Mac and Windows computers. It is so much easier to add umlauts (and accent marks, etc.) on a Mac. To get an umlaut you simply hit Option+u and then type the letter: ä ë ï ö ü . Much more convenient than trying to remember ALT+ combinations or even pulling up the Character Map accessory and searching it. Just my two cents. I think to us English speakers, umlauts are treated like a dot over an "i" -- we think leaving it off does not really change anything. But as others have pointed out, this is far from the case in languages that use the umlaut. |
