"Vacation" is not posh, it is simply time away from work in the US. Or at least where I'm from. It is the one thing we've done to improve your language, Barry. ;) I think "Urlaub" is normally when you have something planned to travel somewhere or do something special with your time away from work, whereas "Ferien" *normally* means the school breaks. "Sommerferien" just began in Bayern with the end of the school year last Friday, for example. Spezial takes "Betriebsurlab" every summer, for example. Why they say this and not "Betriebsferien"...? It is indeed fairly jumbled up, I think.
