In search of a flowery pils |

yikes, to each his own, I guess. there's a lot of nuance across Fanconian pils and kellerbier, enough for each fan to find their sweet spot. for me, few come close to the cleanliness of Leiberth, and the malt and hop expression is among the best I've tried. of course, seasonal variability and batch-to-batch variations do exist; some Franconian brewers put out gems and then six months later their range is full of duds with obvious fermentation defects. and one man's bland may be another's nuance. as for waxy and vegetal, I have to say no such descriptors even came to mind when sampling the Lieberth range, but I was drinking it straight from tap controlled by the brewer himself, and sampling 10-day olf bottles. no doubt the freshness falls off and errors in handling occur when people other than the brewer manage the kegs. as for flowery, I don't take it to mean hoppy, that's far too simple. flowery to me is good floral expression of edelhops with lower spice and fruit character. |
