Weiss or Weizen

I tend to trust Ron Pattinson's explanation, that in ye olde days, Weissbier (white beer) was pale beer brewed from pale air-dried malt, whereas Braunbier (brown beer) was brewed from darker kiln-dried malt.
So Weissbier was not necessarily brewed from wheat, though many Weissbiers did contain some.
Today, the terms Weissbier and Weizenbier are interchangeable. So much so that there is also Schwarze Weisse (Black white) and Dunkles Weissbier - in those cases Weizenbier would be more appropriate. But these days with Black Pale Ale - anything goes.
