Matt has visited the Café Abseits in the summer 2011. The VLB has said to him that he has to do for  3 months a practical work at a brewery and his wish was to find a brewery in franconia (with his good reputation as the heart of the brewery landscape in Germany). He has asked me which breweries I recommend. I have recommended him as top 1 the Weyermann Braumanufaktur. In the year 2012 he worked for 4 months at Weyermann. They offered him to work again and so he did in the year 2013.

The Versuchs- und Lehranstalt für Brauerei in Berlin e.V.  is a members association and was founded in Berlin in 1883 by German brewers and maltsters. For more than 125 years VLB has been working in the field of research, development and training for the brewing industry. Today, round about 120 people work at the VLB in the fields of research, teaching, information, consulting and service. As a "Registered Association" VLB is an independent institute, which co-operates with Berlin University of Technology in the field of brewing science and has a very close network into the brewing and related industry. Since 2002 VLB is the sole holder of Institut für Gärungsgewerbe und Biotechnologie zu Berlin (IfGB).

They offer a brewmaster course in english. It's more concentrated (6 months instead of 9 months at the Doemens Academy). Starting midth of January, end: midth of June. Each year.

It's a big investment (fee: 14.500 Euro - without appartment and living costs).

Nick, You see the connections to the University (Technische Universität Berlin). But this course is not an academic study. Insofar You are right.

But You can study also Brewmaster (Diplom-Braumeister) at two universities in Germany: Technische Unversität München in Weihenstephan und Technische Universität Berlin. It's a short study about 2 years. Target group: brewers who have learned their job in 3 years in breweries ("Lehre").

And You can study Diplom-Ingenieur/in für Brauwesen oder Master of Science/ Bachelor of Science: 5 years (Berlin) or 4,5 years (Munich). But these ingenieurs normally don't brew. They are manager in big breweries and head brewer of a staff of brewers or they research or develop machines for brewing etc..
