Kommunbrauhaus in Neuhaus a/d Pegnitz Closed

In response to my suggestion that he make the looong journey there, Barry said that the Brauhaus has closed. Lo and behold, Mark A. posted about this late last year, citing Germanbreweries.com, which reported "The communal brewers of Neuhaus an der Pegnitz no longer use the towns old Falkenloch brewery as, according to Herr Benaburger, it is "Kaput." Since March, the wort has been brewed at Bürgerbräu in Hersbruck."

Treinjan coughed up further info in response to my query in another, filthy forum not worthy of mention here, which suggests that the brewhouse was forced to close by ...wait for it... administrative decree. So we can assume that the dreaded Health Department came round and found something objectional.

That article does rave about the beer, so maybe they're able to pull it off well in Hersbruck: "Märzen-coloured, with very little CO2, it's very typical [of Zoiglbier]. The slightly sour aroma is also typical [of Zoigl]. We really like it's very soft and smooth start, which fills the palate with a fruity maltiness, and ends fruity and hoppy. A very balanced beer!"

I'm also reminded of how the average Franconian with whom I've spoken about this is utterly unaware of Hersbrucker's world-wide hop fame. Spalt, yes, Hallertau, jawohl, Hersbruck, hä?
