What did I tell you, Nick!  I can't remember Neder Fassbier ever been anything but pretty decent - remember that we drank it for 3 weeks last September.  But agree that Friday's was especially good, helped by the warm sunshine.  I think that drinking beer on a sunny day outside Neder, with the splendid view of Alte Rathaus is a particularly delightful experience, even though I missed the ever changing vista of Neder regulars that can be enjoyed inside!

Yes, we did make it down to Grieff for a lovely seidla of the Helles vom Fass - this seems to me a Helles that verges on a Pils, very pale yellow (must be all Pilsner malt) and not especially hoppy - just a very well made beer.  We bypassed Eichorn - left for our next visit - in order to save ourselves for a long awaited visit to Hebendanz, which had been shut during our September sojourn.  But what a disappointment after such a lengthy wait!  Hebendanz has had a reputation for being a little on rough side and it seems like the new owners (?) are doing their best to change the image. There were signs of a recent makeover (re-decoration, new tables, etc) and food being served (did they do this before - Neder doesn't?).  It was also nearly empty whilst Neder was pretty full.  What about the beer, you say?  I'm afraid this was another disappointment -a very ordinary keller/land/fassbier, very little taste and completely different from the Helles that we had in Schloessle last year.  I wish the new owners success and perhaps their way is appropriate as nearly all the tables were reserved (presumably by diners) after 6 pm, but it seems to be the end of the Hebendanz that was, if not loved, certainly respected for being a one-off.

Still, maybe we'll give it another try next week, just to see if things have improved.
