My last 2 postings came out of sequence, so just to confirm: given that Mark will be arriving in Bamberg around lunchtime after a long flight, that it's Fred's last day in Bamberg and that we are travelling up from Eschawo, Annafest is a non-runner.  In addition, the idea of a get together of people, some of whom have never met each other, being held in the middle of a festival strikes me as being a non-runner.

I suppose that we all have our favourite places in Bamberg, so choice of venue is tricky but it was felt that a visit to Abseits at some stage, given Gerhard services to this Forum, was certainly required.  However, I respectfully suggest (not at all influenced by personal preference or that of one the offical ambassadors to Bieres des Tages) that Spezial would make the best initial meeting pount.  It is the most central place in Bamberg and I don't think that anyone would object to drinking the Rauch or the U!

Later venues could then be negotiated, with a visit to Canalissimo certainly on the cards.  I'm meeting Mark tomorrow so further discussion can be had.

Incidentally, following a not so successful return to the golf course yesterday (strangely, a months absence drinking Franken beer did little to improve my already shaky swing), we retired to the club house in Lahinch for remedial drinks to find that they were selling Smithwick's Pale Ale.  I'd not had a chance to try this as my locals are restricted to stout and lager.  I hate to say anything good about a Diageo product but, for a keg beer, this was distinctly decent.  Nice and hoppy and tasty, quite possibly the best beer that I've ever tasted in Ireland apart from one or two cask beers in Dublin.  Now, how can I get my locals to stock it or, better still, some of the 'craft' beers from Irish micros?
