The JVA (Justizvollzugsanstalt), a prison, is between the church and the river. If you leave the Schlenkerla and go after the Ambräusianum to the river Regnitz and then on the "Leinritt" in the direction to the Löwenbrücke, You pass the prison, a big building with grids before the windows.

During the Sandkerwa the prisoners get a sausage in a roll. It's a terrible time for the prisoners. they can hear the visitors of the Sandkerwa laughing,  but cannot leave the prison to get a beer.

This prison is only for criminals until an imprisonment of 2 years (men and women).

The building was build as a hospital (14th century; opened 1330). Later it was part of the university.

In the year 1747 an old "Zucht- und Arbeitshaus" (prison with the duty to work) in the Königstraße was destroyed by fire. Some years later (1760) the building was used as a prison.

The locals call it "Café Sandbad". Sandbad is a small street where You find the entrance of the prison.

The name Sand refers to the sandstone which was reduced in the hills as Stephansberg. You find the name sand also in other combinations:
- Sandgebiet: sand area, a district between the river Regnitz and the cathedrale
- Sandstraße: sand street (the long street from Schlenkerla to Pelikan.
- Sandkerwa: sand fair, a traditional (beer) festival the last full weekend of August.

The way between the prison and the river is called "Leinritt". This refers to Leine (leash) and reiten (to ride). In the history the ships have been drawn upstream by horses. So the horses need a way without trees between the horses and the river.
