OT: Visit to Moedlareuth

Thanks to our good friend Ludwig Linder, yesterday we visited the Deutsch-Deutsches Museum in the tiny village of Moedlareuth.

Don't know if any of you have been there or know about Moedlareuth but it is situated slap bang on the border between Bavaria and Thuringia or, in other words, the border between the former DDR and FDR.  As a result, it is often known as 'Kleine Berlin' because it was divided in exactly the same way as the capitol.  All of the border fortifications are in place - it is truly amazing and horrific to see the trouble that the DDR went to stop people leaving. Given the expense of maintaining this border over nearly 1,500 kms, it is hardly surprising that their economy was shot.

There is an interesting film (in either German or English) illustrating the history of village, a museum with lots of info on the history of divided Germany and a large collection of old vehicles connected with the border.

All in all, a fascinating visit and well recommended for anyone who can bear to tear themselves away from Franken beer for an afternoon!
