Bamberger Hörnla

As a gardener I've heard of these potatoes and am quite surprised that they are only now 'in season' - in the UK most 'new' potatoes appear in June or July. When are they planted? Unfortunately they are not available in the UK and due to strict controls over imports of seed potatoes, unlikely to be. Are they anything like the 'pink fir' variety?
