Sheffield

Indeed we did spend a week in a flat in central Sheffield (conveniently located a block or two from the venerable Bath Hotel (now owned by Thornbridge) and upstairs from the then-new The Hop (Ossett), in a complex that was only a few years old. We found it through booking.com, and I believe it's no longer operating as a short-term rental, only longer-term, corporate type rentals.

I've also stayed at a Premiere Inn, as well as the very lovely old pub inn Norfolk Arms. Bus service to it ain't convenient, but the walk from there into the city is fabulous, leading past a number of great pubs. Taxis were reasonable.

I have also just recently asked about finding FeWo's in England, see posts about "Hastings" below. We're actually thinking now of two weeks over Xmas in Ramsgate, rather than Hastings, just because it seems a bit better located for getting around to other interesting places by train, as well as having more FeWo's. Homeaway.co.uk, holidaylettings.co.uk, and ownersdirect.co.uk are what I'm currently using to look around the Southeast.

I adore Sheffield, and if I could choose to move to any large city in Europe, I think it would have to be there. I'm jealous of your trip. People talk about how London is up and coming with all the new keg-beer "railway arch" breweries mimicing American keg microbreweries, but Sheffield is simply soaking in great pubs. And it's probably *quite* a bit cheaper than 4-quid pints! And northern real ale is simply better, despite the sparkler.
