One for me? I only have a technical Bachelor's from Discount State University and did 5/6 of the German for foreign language speakers intensive course, stopping at Goethe level C1. I would guess, however, it may be related to stiften. And indeed, the idea of a Stiftschule does jibe with the idea of brewing being divided between monastic and noble (am Hof) groups.
