"I assume that you mean that, generally, untergarig beers are harder than obergarig ones? " Yes exactly. "I wonder why Bayern breweries are so obsessed with unterg brewing." That's a very good question. I don't know the answer but I'm sure tradition as somethinng to do with it or maybe a lot to do with it I'm grateful for it because where else in the world can you go to get this many great untergarig beers in one region? Czech republic I suppose. I'm glad to be able to visit the UK for great real ales and Franconia/Bayern for great lagers. Not that there can't be overlap. I'm happy to try the pale ales that are brewed in Germany as well. I'd be sad it the untergarig brewing tradition in southern Germany were to dissapear (not that it's likely). Another point I will make is that to me the experience of the pub itself can influence my enjoyment of a beer. I actually think of myself as more a pub geek than a beer geek. When I think of my experiences in Franconia I think more of the pubs and bier kellers I've visited more so than the beers themselves altough good beer is an essential component of course. This probably can partially explain why I have such a different view to the beers of Franconia than the devoted RateBeer contributor. |
