Likewise! My recent visit to North Wales was a bit of an eye-opener - we visited 3 Wetherspoons and sampled the usual wide range of beers, all in good condition - and very cheap: from around £2 to £2.50 - but generally completely unknown. Many were not even in the 2015 edition of GBG, so I presume were new beers. We visited a few other pubs where much the same conditions prevailed, except the beer was dearer at £3 - 3.50 and sometimes not in as good condition. Ine pub offered a discount (I think 10% but may have been 20%) for Camra members, which we are not. I think that most of them offered little free samplers but I'm not sure what you can tell from the first mouthful of a beer. Although it is great to have the micro breweries, North Wales is a bit short of pubs owned by more established names, which, from my recent experiences in Manchester, seem to offer more in terms of stability of brands and flavours. |
