Wouldn't like to fight tooth and nail over the claim but. If you look at the situation historically, you will see that Manchester kept its real ale culture during the awful years of the 1970s when cities like Sheffield and london virtually abandoned proper beer. I wouldn't like to comment on current situation re micros as I'm not so conversant with situation but I know that there are lots of new breweries (perhaps too many?) In all parts of their.

 If there is any competition to Manchester in a historic sense, my vote would go to the black country (that area to the north west of Birmingham).
