Was Appendorf an expected closure? i.e. You didn't visit expecting it to be open?  Scharpf is such a difficult place to get to without a car. Might try train to ebern and cycle (combine with seßlach). I managed a visit in February and enjoyed the Maerzen and bock. Excellent and a real gem of a place.
