Cycle tour to Seβlach |

Yesterday me and the missus cycled up to Seβlach from Bad Staffelstein on a beautiful warm and sunny summers day. We visited Hellmuth in Wiesen (avoiding Thomann, not a favourite) which was very good, Streicher in Kaltenbrunn which was not so great, though very friendly, then on to Scharpf in Heilgersdorf, one of my favourites. It was Kerwa weekend and the place was pretty busy but bizarrely for a Kerwa there was only bottled beer from a rather difficult to find canteen type room in the Schloβ. I always thought that beer was mandatory at Kerwa but I didn’t see anyone drinking. Anyway, the Zwickl and Maerzen in Scharpf were excellent. I have a liter of each currently chilling in my fridge… Finally we moved on to Seβlach early evening. It really is a beautiful small town, a kind of mini Rothenburg, fully walled (the upkeep of which comes courtesy of profits from the Kommunbrauerei) and during the summer pretty touristy. A walk round at sunset yesterday evening was very pleasant and almost deserted (all seemed to be in the pub). The beer in Reinwand was excellent, last time I wasn’t too impressed but as is the case in the Oberpfalz the Kommunbrau beer may well be changeable (or maybe it was just me). I know a few of the regulars on here have been to Seβlach and agree with me – I urge anyone to visit, there is a good bus service (incl. Sundays) from Coburg which obviously gets you back to Bamberg by train (just bear in mind it is outwith the VGN). It’s also a beautiful area for cycling and the brewery options are wide in that area (returning by train either via Ebern or Bad Staffelstein). With small detours we could have also visited Pferdsfeld and Nedersdorf – both also excellent. |
