| Of course I would, haven't I just explained that! I would consider myself as among the most Franken aware native British English speakers, and I do have a smattering of the German language, although mostly learned 60 years ago. But following the general tendency of native BE speakers, when we don't know an adjective for a town, county or country, we simply use the name of country, etc as a modifier. It's got nothing to do with German grammar, it's just common usage. I hear all sorts of mangled English from non-English speakers but don't get upset about it, it's the way that language chanes and develops. And, actually, I would personally prefer Manchester beer to Mancunian beer - most Manchester people don't really think of themselves as Mancunians (and certainly not Mancs!). Certainly keep correcting my German but not my native tongue! |
