Krug Geisfeld - Flaschen!

Following some interesting conversations about canning with our US-based beer friends on a Zoom Stammtisch, I'm wondering whether any of the Franken breweries use canning as opposed to bottling - in Germany, as opposed to export (see below).  I don't spend too much time in Getraenkemarkte (is that right - doesn't look it!) and, unbelievably, it's more than a year since I was last in Franken!  But I seem to recall rows of bottles and I can't recall seeing much in the way of tinnned beer.

In the virtual Stammtisch, invariably, people are drinking canned beer, with only an occasional bottle.  Now, my experience of canned beer (which goes back to Watney's Party 7 - recently re-introduced! - and Double Diamond, etc.) is rather ancient  and not too encouraging.  But, I'm assured by these people who are very experienced in both brewing and drinking beer, that there is little, if any, difference between bottled and modern canned beer.

I know, 'cos I've seen them drinking it, that Schlenkerla's various products are canned in the U.S.A. (shipped over in a big tank) and, with the usual rservations about draft always being better, are said to be, at least, quite good.  From memory, I've also seen St Bernardus being drunk from the can.

They tell me that canning is quite cheap, much more so than bottling, which is generally said to be the most expensive item in a brewery's inventory - which is why so many small outfits use the likes of Rittmayer.  I'm also informed that mobile canning is available - the plant (which I assume must be quite small) goes to the brwery and carries out the process on site.

Can someone enlighten me, please?
