Drinking a Schlammersdorfer Landbier as I type... |

I haven't been to the Witzgal *keller* in 5 years -- I mostly come in the early spring and fall so it is closed (Plus being only open on Sunday doesn't make it any easier). I didn't say the beer was filtered, just that filtered beer doesn't last in an opened barrel. I have been at both Schlenkerla and Mahrs when well before official closing time they wouldn't put up a new barrel -- we weren't drinking enough. If you serve it all the same day there is no problem. The worst beers I've ever had in Franconia were, I think, barrels that were left open overnight. And even the unfiltered beers probably don't have the same amount yeast that a Rale Ale does -- which is while a firken of Real Ale will last a while (thought the flavor changes over this time -- that is a feature, not a bug -- and I doubt that would go ever well in Franconia) BTW a US barrel of beer -- a measure of volume -- is 31 US gallons. A barrel of something else will have a different volume (a barrel of wine, is I think 25 gallons, a barrel of oil, 55) I usually use the term "keg" for beer dispensed with CO2 and "cask" to mean no CO2 with latter having options like "hand pulled" or "gravity fed." |
